One of the joys of returning to the same place to paint over the year is that I am able to watch how the colours change with the seasons. It is partly due to the changes in ‘local colour’, for example the season changes to the colours on Brea Hill, but it is also to do with the position of the sun in the sky. In mid-summer, around midday, the sun bleaches out the dry sand to a dusty light pink which is the perfect foil for the purples which characterise the reflected sky in the wet sand.
